Transition, Bank Expansion, and New Businesses Spark Converse Growth

Never mind the national economy; Converse entrepreneurs and institutions are responding to new opportunities and that translates into growth. One of the most difficult transitions for a small town is the retention of an ongoing business- that has been accomplished in Converse again, for the 3rd time in the last four years with Achor Hardware becoming Converse Hardware and Supply. First Farmer's Bank and Trust is about to embark on another major expansion at their home base which reflects their commitment to core values in banking at a time when major banks are unsettled. Lastly, three new businesses, are poised for growth in Converse as the downtown streetscape continues to change.

Converse Hardware and Supply

Achor Hardware was recently purchased by Andrew and Jennifer King. Wanting to retire, Ron and Joani Achor were ready to close the business. So the Kings hating to see the store close, decided to purchase the business. Jennifer King reports they have had a great response and are looking forward to expanding some departments. They hope to entice the browser yet keep all those hardware items you need on a day to day basis.

Converse Service Center

The former Graham Ford downtown Converse location has transitioned into two new businesses. Andrew and Jennifer King have also purchased this as well and along with some innovative ideas and personnel with background knowledge have opened the Converse Service Center. Located in the former service center for Graham Ford, and under the management of Marvin Mooneyhan, is a vehicle service center. Customers can get vehicles repaired or serviced, tires fixed, changed, or purchase a new pair. There is also a detail shop to make your vehicle look brand new.

Amico's

The front part of the former Graham Ford location will house a drive thru coffee shop named "Amico's" pronounced "ah me co s" which means "friend" in Italian. Incidentally, the shop will be operated by the Friends. Amicos will serve muffins, quiche, soups and sandwiches and other homemade items. It will be open for breakfast and lunch. The building will also be a WIFI hotspot.

First Farmers Bank and Trust

First Farmers Bank and Trust recently began construction on an expansion project of just under 8,000 sq. ft. This addition will house expanded bookkeeping, and Information Technology Departments with office space, break room, restrooms, and conference center to house up to 40 additional employees. In addition this area will house new mainframe systems and network server. Completion is expected by the beginning of 2nd quarter 2010

Converse Computers

Greg Messer, owner and proprietor of Converse Computers, has a diverse background in computers and the internet. From website design and hosting, particularly in the real estate industry; to system repair, upgrades, and virus removal, Greg has a wide range of skills and knowledge to match the needs of a business or individual. He said it has taken awhile to open the shop once it was acquired as there has been an ongoing remodeling of the interior over the past two years. Converse Computers features affordable systems for those who think they can't afford it ($75.00 and under) to new system sales. Shop hours are very friendly for the working person: 3:00-7:00, Mon.Sat.
